Can You Take Wellbutrin (Bupropion) and Adderall Together?

Updated October 4, 2026By the Medication Interaction Checker editorial teamHow we check

Short answer

Use caution

Sometimes, but only under a prescriber’s supervision. Doctors do combine bupropion (Wellbutrin) and Adderall, for example for ADHD with depression. There are two cautions: bupropion lowers the seizure threshold, and stimulants can add to that risk. Bupropion also blocks the liver enzyme CYP2D6, which can raise amphetamine levels in the body.

Amphetamine salts (Adderall)A stimulant ADHD medicine
Bupropion (Wellbutrin, Zyban)An antidepressant and quit-smoking aid
Interaction level: Use cautionHigher seizure risk; Can change levels of the other medicine

The two main concerns

1. Seizure risk. The bupropion label warns that seizure risk depends on dose and on other medicines that lower the seizure threshold. Stimulants are among the medicines that can add to this risk.

2. Higher amphetamine levels. Bupropion is a strong blocker of the CYP2D6 enzyme. The Adderall label notes that amphetamine is partly processed by CYP2D6, so CYP2D6 blockers can increase exposure. That can mean more side effects at your usual Adderall dose: a faster heartbeat, higher blood pressure, jitteriness or trouble sleeping.

Who is at higher risk of seizures

  • People with a seizure disorder (bupropion should not be used)
  • People with a current or past eating disorder such as bulimia or anorexia (bupropion should not be used)
  • Anyone suddenly stopping alcohol, benzodiazepines or sedatives
  • People with a history of head injury, or taking higher than prescribed doses

Side effects that can stack up

Both medicines can cause insomnia, anxiety, reduced appetite, dry mouth, headache, and increased heart rate and blood pressure. Taking both in the morning, as prescribed, helps limit sleep problems. Your prescriber may check your blood pressure and pulse more often when the combination is started.

A seizure, chest pain, fainting, severe agitation, or a racing heartbeat that will not slow down.

Taking the combination safely

  • Take each medicine exactly as prescribed and never double a missed dose
  • Avoid or keep alcohol to a minimum, and do not suddenly stop heavy drinking without medical help
  • Limit caffeine, which adds to stimulant side effects
  • Tell your prescriber about any history of seizures, head injury or eating disorders

Frequently asked questions

Do Wellbutrin and Adderall work well together?

Some people benefit, especially when ADHD and depression occur together. It is a prescriber decision that depends on your history and how you respond.

Does the same apply to Vyvanse?

Yes. Vyvanse (lisdexamfetamine) turns into amphetamine in the body, so the same seizure threshold and CYP2D6 considerations apply.

Can I drink coffee with Wellbutrin and Adderall?

Small amounts are usually fine, but caffeine adds to jitteriness, anxiety and trouble sleeping. Cut back if you notice those effects.
